There's always a dark side to generously helping out your fellow coworkers. On the one hand, people can start taking your help for granted and soon enough, you'll be doing your work on top of theirs. On the other hand, if you're unlucky enough to have a toxic manager, they just might start blaming you for wanting to help. 

This kind of friction between an overly competent employee and their manager often stems from a place of insecurity on the part of the latter. When you're too good at your job to the point that you're helping others out, the most insecure managers won't interpret that behavior as decency but rather as a threat. Any reasoning they give for subsequent punishment is more like grasping at straws than coming from any sort of legitimate place.     I worked as the lead cook in a very busy restaurant (50-75k weekly). My boss would write who's working what station and generally we follow this.

  • This manager seems like the kind of guy who would never admit when they've been proven wrong or out of line. That's why malicious compliance really was the best course of action. If you want to forbid this guy from ever leaving his work station again even in the case of an emergency, then you better be willing to lead by example when the tables are turned.
